help!!! Candy corn fiasco....

I need someone to tell me how to bake fimo canes for slicing. Obviously baking them the usual time is too long though I saw no indication of reduced baking time or temp in the tutorial I read...course I could have missed that part.

I made 6 canes to cut up for candy corn and they just crack and break apart when I try to cut them. I tried putting some back in the oven to heat them up a bit cause they seemed to cut easier when warm but overall that didn't work too well either.

Oh what have I done wrong??!!

When baking canes they should slice easily when they are warm out of the oven.
When i have used them like this in the past it was always a rush to get them from the oven and quickly slice.
I can't offer any advice other than to warm and slice.

Susan, how long were you bakeing them and at what temp? I am not a candy maker, but things that I want to slice, I usually bake at a little lower temp and for not so long a time. You can always stick them back in after you have them cut. Good luck!

Thanks Nikki and Casey. I have purchased citrus and candy canes at miniatures shows in the past which were intended to be sliced. If I needed a lemon slice for a cup of tea, I just sliced on off....no problem,,,still have that lemon one. They were not unbaked clay...they were firm. Also, I took a class once where we made strawberries and sliced some of them...I do not recall that they were baked at any lower temp or shorter time than the others. However, lower temp and shorter time does make sense so I will try it. It just seems like such a waste of time and materials....bleh.

Tabitha it maybe that you hadn't conditioned the clay enough before making the cane. So that when it bakes and you try to slice it, it either crumbles or breaks. Was it a new packet of clay or an old one? If it was an old packet, try adding some quick mix to help recondition the clay. I normally bake canes on a very low heat for about 20mins. Then slice while its warm. If I can be of any help just drop me an email..xxx

Debbie...I admit that it was a combination of both... but a few (I made 6) cut nicely at first. Also, the colors didn't stick together very well. Think I will drop you a line later.
