So I am calling this one "done" because sometimes you just have to...... It will become part of the Alice Project....the Hatter is pleased that at least he has someplace to park it now. :-D
While it is not exactly as I want it, I have learned a lot from the "doing" of it.
The upholstry was added because I did not like the looks of the ladderback of the chair....that worked out ok in the end, even though not planned. I am not pleased with the junctions of the trunk and branches and will work to make that transition smoother in Exhibit 2. I have some ivy that I may drape around the trunks of this one to disguise a few of the things that bother me.
I used an artist acrylic paint (in the tube) to coat the branches and that was ok but not perfect. Tallulah Belle suggested to try modeling paste which I am considering. If flexibility is not an issue, covering the wires with clay makes the best transition except I think it would be a little difficult to cover some of the thinner twigs and have them look thin. Nikki has suggested a type of thin, crimped spool wire which could hold the clay or paste better.
Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and suggestions.
I want to have a second try before I start on the "One". This time, I will make it (the chair) up as I go along rather than try to make it over an existing chair. I have a gazillion other things to do first....unfortunately...so I've made myself notes and hope I won't forget.
In the meanwhile, I'm putting all the last minute touches on the Alice Project....TG has agree to photograph tomorrow if I can get my act together by then.
And I didn't forget that bird's nest.....just have to make it....

NO matter what you say about it I really like this chair! It looks so good with upholstry! Great work! Can't wait number 2 and ONE!;)And Alice project too!
I love this chair....it looks exactly as it should. I wouldn't change a thing. Love the throne too. You've done amazing work!
Carolyn
Tabitha, Practice makes perfect.....By the time that the third chair is in the works, you will have a lot of experience under your belt and it will be amazing. I can't wait to see that one! Keep up the good work!
Tabitha... there's a flexible modeling paste available from Liquitex. You'll find it with the other modeling pastes; there's even heavy gel which is clear but gives definition.
I think this is a great idea & I may give it a try. Thank you for the idea. (hope that's not plagerizing. Just a la mode...)
hugs Karin
The uphosltery goes really well with the chair thanks for sharing Looking forward to seeing new versions.
Oooh yes I really like the upholstered part too I think it fits it really well! The Hatter is very lucky, so now waiting in anticipation for the project it will go into, Kate xx
Thanks for the encouragement friends! Yes, Casey....practice, practice, practice! lol. Karin...have at it! I'd love to see your interpretation. And I will look for the Liquitex brand since I have discovered that I will have to buy some fresh stuff.
This has been fun. I challenge anyone to see something in the full-scale world and envision it small....try something new....stretch...dream big.
It looks fabulous, wonderful job :)
Tabitha, I really like the Chair, and for your first attempt I think its fab.
Maybe on the next one you could do some twisted twiggy arm rests? xxx
A mi personalmente me gusta muchisimo y el tapizado te ha quedado de maravilla, enhorabuena!!
besitos ascension
Wonderful....I love it. This is brilliant for a first try as well.
I think the upholstery worked really well.
I dont think the transition between trunk and branch is as bad as you think it might be but I get where you are coming from. I think Nikki mentioned reducing the bulk and that took me a bit of figuring out as well.
I have Liquitex molding paste and matte gel but i personally find it a tad runny for bark which is why I went back to Golden.
Our Michaels here has started to have a pretty decent selection of paints and accessories including Liquitex & Golden plus artists acrylics in the tube. Much cheaper than the art stores, esp with a coupon :-)
Deb....as a matter a fact, I had thought the exact same thing about arms rests! Woot!
Thanks, Ascension!
Jayne...our Michael's has just recently reduced their art department so who knows what I will find. I have Golden's Soft Gel Medium which I like. I can try the one and only art store if I have to.
Bellissima! Your chair is real "magic". For me is perfect.
Tabitha,
I think the chair is wonderful!!! It is an idea that you could continue having fun with for ages.
I am imagining a witch that has one in her house. If you sit in it roots spring out to make you a captive! :-)
Ha quedado muy bonito el trono.
Buen trabajo.
Besujis!!!
Susan, Susan, Susan, you have me itching to get my wire out too!
I think you have done an absolutely fantastic job, and what i love about this chair is that it's like two worlds blending and mixing into each other. I really like the chair more normal at the front mixed with the fantasy at the back, it makes it more magical. I bet you are really proud of it. I'd be sitting for hours looking and smiling.
I'm going to have to search out the modelling pastes and give them a try too. I'll wait until i can go to hobbycraft.
You really have me itching now. Do you remember i said on my blog i'd like to make cages like i made the table bookstand. I now see it also as a chair.
Check out this magical furniture link.
